Takoma Park’s Republic: A dream come true

Republic is into Takoma Park — big time.

The 200-seat restaurant, which opened in 2013, may be part of Black Restaurant Group, a local chain with four eateries in Montgomery County and several in D.C., but it’s a homegrown establishment.

That’s because co-owner Danny Wells was born and raised in Takoma Park, and he’s a big downtown booster, according to Megan Rognrud, Republic’s general manager.

“He worked with Black Restaurant Group for a long time. It was always a dream of his to open a restaurant in Takoma Park, when the opportunity arose to create a unique neighborhood bistro in the heart of downtown Takoma,” Rognrud said.

It seemed only natural to call the restaurant Republic — a nod to the city’s self-referential moniker, the People’s Republic of Takoma Park.

One way Republic contributes to the community: The restaurant’s chefs typically buy produce at the Takoma Park Farmers Market, Rognrud said.

And, it’s participated in all three annual Silver Spring-Takoma Park Restaurant Weeks, including this year’s, which runs from Tuesday, Sept. 5, through Sunday, Sept. 10.

This year, Republic is offering a three-course lunch for $17. Dishes include salads, soups, fried calamari, seafood stew, a half po’ boy with fries and creme brulee for dessert. For $5 more, diners can add a mini beer or glass of wine. (The po’ boy features oysters, shrimp, catfish or crab.)

In past years, Restaurant Week has pulled in new diners from downtown Silver Spring who may have never tried Republic, Rognrud said.

And this year, Republic is hosting a kickoff for Restaurant Week from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 5.

Why?

“We’re big on supporting the local community,” Rognrud said. “This way, we can also let Takoma Park folks know about Silver Spring restaurants, too.”

Republic is at 6939 Laurel Ave., Takoma Park. Its phone number is 301-270-3000; its website is republictakoma.com.
